Technology Integration Educators (TIEs) play an important role in ensuring students receive an engaging educational experience that prepares them for the future. TIEs boost the curriculum teachers use in the classroom through the strategic integration of technology which enhances student learning and fosters a deeper understanding of the subject matter. The TIEs job is to provide teachers with the tools, resources, and expertise to effectively utilize technology to empower students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and technology skills that will serve them well throughout their academic journey and beyond.
No two days are the same for a TIE. From consulting with administrators on technology initiatives to collaborating with teachers to implement technology in classrooms, TIEs are constantly adapting to meet the unique needs of each school and its students. TIEs may facilitate professional development workshops one day, troubleshoot technical issues the next, or evaluate the effectiveness of an integration all to help promote student-centered learning with technology. This versatility and adaptability are essential for ensuring that technology serves as a powerful tool for enhancing student learning while empowering teachers to deliver more engaging lesson plans.
“As TIEs, we strive to integrate appropriate technologies into daily lessons in a meaningful way. At the end of the day, we want the technology to enhance the content in the classroom and allow the students to gain a deeper understanding of the lesson through critical thinking and communication skills,” said Joe Granio, a TIE at Gilbert Public Schools.
The integration of technology into the classroom has a transformative impact on student learning. From elementary to high school, technology integration is enriching the learning experience across grade levels. Fifth graders at Sonoma Ranch used 3D design software to visualize complex geometric shapes, while eighth graders at Desert Ridge Junior High virtually explored ancient civilizations using VR technology. Even language learners at Mesquite High School benefited from technology, creating comic strips to practice their Spanish skills.
By providing students with access to a wide range of digital tools and resources, TIEs empower the students to immerse themselves in their education. By aligning technology alongside course curriculum, integrated lessons can enhance engagement, foster critical thinking, and promote creativity, ultimately creating a more dynamic and personalized learning experience. Additionally, technology integration helps ensure that all students have equal opportunities to access information and develop essential skills for the 21st century, which works to prepare students for a future where technology plays an increasingly important role in their lives.
TIEs also help ensure that technology integration aligns with Arizona's academic standards. By working closely with teachers, TIEs help to identify opportunities to incorporate technology into lessons that reinforce key learning objectives. This approach ensures that technology serves as a tool to enhance learning, rather than a distraction. TIEs also provide guidance on selecting the appropriate technologies that support specific standards and curriculum areas while making sure that technology is used effectively and efficiently. Through their expertise and guidance, TIEs help to create a learning environment that not only engages students but also equips them with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed on state assessments.
“Our TIEs integrate technology at all levels. One day a TIE might be working to enhance a 4th grade class and the next they’re in an AP Physics class!” added Shawn Abele, Instructional Technology Coordinator at Gilbert Public Schools. “They work tirelessly to enhance teaching and learning, ensuring that technology is used effectively and meaningfully in every classroom.”
TIEs are a vital asset to Gilbert Public Schools. By empowering teachers and students with the tools and expertise to effectively integrate technology, TIEs are creating a more engaging, innovative, and equitable learning environment for all. Through their dedication and expertise, TIEs are helping to ensure that GPS students are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
