Gilbert Public Schools Celebrates Class of 2026 Military Enlistees and Academy Appointments

GILBERT, Ariz. (June 22, 2026) - As the class of 2026 transitions from high school to the next chapters of their lives, Gilbert Public Schools (GPS) is proud to recognize the exceptional dedication of graduating seniors who have chosen to enlist in the United States Armed Forces. Across GPS campuses, 33 students have officially enlisted in the military, with many more in the process of enlisting.

The distinct journeys chosen by these students showcase how various academic courses, extracurricular activities, athletics, and career programs equip graduates for military life.

Campo Verde High School graduate Tori Thom is heading to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs after earning three congressional nominations from Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego and Representative Andy Biggs. During high school, Thom kept up with advanced classes, served as the second-in-command for her campus JROTC unit, and played violin in the school orchestra. Thom says her goal is to become an officer in the US Air Force, become a fighter pilot, and someday earn a spot on the Thunderbird USAF F-16 demo team

“Campo Verde has provided many opportunities for me, and the support I received from my teachers, advisors, and school leaders has been beyond outstanding,” shared Thom.

At Gilbert Classical Academy (GCA), graduate Max Fioresi received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point after earning a nomination from U.S. Senator Mark Kelly. Fioresi built a strong foundation for the academy by staying active across GCA’s campus, where he participated in a variety of clubs and sports teams. Fioresi and his family credit GCA's dedication to developing well-rounded people, challenging students academically while requiring community service hours, which allowed him to comprehensively fill out every section of his West Point application. Fioresi plans to major in geospatial science during his time at the academy. 

"He grew so much by getting involved in as many activities as he did," said his father, noting that Max’s older brother is also currently deployed in the military. "We’re very excited about where he’s going, and we know he’s going to do well. We are so proud of him.”

Gilbert High School graduate Ryan Lewis plans to work in a technology-focused career while in the U.S. Navy. Lewis says he is inspired by his desire to travel, see the world, and learn about different philosophies across the globe. Lewis credits Gilbert High for teaching him the true value of human connection while learning to be a talkative and respectful person who can comfortably converse with anyone.

At Mesquite High School, graduate Ian Ebert enlisted in the U.S. Army to pursue a purpose larger than himself. Ebert balanced a variety of programs at Mesquite High, participating in both the school’s drama department and the wrestling team. He says his experience with drama and wrestling helped him build strong communication skills, mental sharpness, and the physical endurance he needs to succeed in basic training.

Desert Ridge High School graduate Anazayah Gear found her physical and mental readiness for the military through the school's athletic programs. As a member of the wrestling team, Gear built the discipline and strength needed for basic training, even earning a spot as a state qualifier during her very first season. Gear has enlisted in the U.S. Navy and will be joining through the branch's buddy enlistment option alongside a close friend. She says her coaches and teammates helped push her to succeed and develop the confidence to enlist in the military.

One graduate from Highland High School developed a strong work ethic and discipline by balancing both digital photography and Advanced Agriculture Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs. These programs required the graduate to manage time effectively, with Advanced Agriculture requiring at least 15 hours of hands-on industry work each week outside of regular school hours to pass. This ultimately helped the student develop the maturity and work ethic needed to successfully transition into the military.
